The two Temples of Abu Simbel, built by Ramses II, are regarded as the greatest examples of ancient Egyptian architecture because of their distinctive style. They capture the splendor and majesty of the New Kingdom.
In order to save these two temples from the impending flood that the Aswan Dam was threatening to cause, the Egyptian government and UNESCO decided to work together.
The four global gods Ptah, Re-Her-Akhtey, Amun-Re, and Ramses II are honored in the Abu Simbel Temples. Another name for the magnificent Temple of Ramesses II is the Sun Temple of Ramesses II. In a symbolic sense, the two temples—those of Ramses II and that of Queen Nefertari—bring Ramesses II, Nefertari, Hathor, and the Sun God together as one. The temple of Queen Nefertari is also known as the temple of Hathor, the wife of the Sun God.
